Tuesday thoughts

I started writing this post last Tuesday — and I had every intention of finishing it, honest — until I came home from work to the polar vortexing of my apartment (yep, still making that a verb). I even had this photo lurking in my draft: 20140107-141515.jpg

Roll tide. Forever.

For some reason, links aren’t working right now, so I’ll incorporate them later. I didn’t want to start another entry that never got published.

Things I read:

I just finished reading Burial Rites, by Hannah Kent. It is the story of Agnes CrazyicelandiclastnamethatIcan’trememberhowtospell, the last person ever to be executed in Iceland (in 1829). I know, I know. A little bit of light reading. I absolutely loved it, and I was surprised at how much I sympathized with Agnes. It was incredibly well-written (much more so than this “review”), and the descriptions of Iceland during that time period are heartwrenching. I cannot imagine living like these people did, but I’m happy to read about it from the comfort of a well-heated home.

Things I ate:

I made one new thing last week — before I lost access to a kitchen — and it was fabulous. WellFed’s Paleo Pad Thai] (http://www.theclothesmakethegirl.com/2011/05/08/paleo-pad-thai/). I’ve come to think of some of the tenets of this ayurvedic challenge as “paleo lite” — the only difference being the consumption of legumes and beans, at least to my untrained eye. I loved this, even as leftovers, and I wish I had been able to follow up with my plan to have it again. I also planned to make Domesticate Me’s Cauliflower Fried Rice(http://www.domesticate-me.com/cauliflower-fried-rice/), which I have made before. Its one of my favorites, and I plan to make it again as soon as I can. I entertained thoughts of making a batch of Skinny Sesame Chicken(http://champagneinmyboots.com/2013/08/22/skinny-sesame-chicken-garlic-soy-sauce-marinated-green-beans/)  from Champagne in my Boots to go along with the Fried Rice, but ended up not having to make that decision.

By not having access to a kitchen, I did make some progress on my 2014 goal to try new restaurants in Atlanta — Antica Posta and Timone’s. My mom was craving Italian, so we made an OpenTable rez on Friday night for Antica, and it was fancier than we were anticipating. I had the octopus appetizer and a salad, and I really enjoyed both of them. Saturday night, I went with friends to Timone’s, which is run by the chef who does Rosebud (maybe my favorite brunch in ATL) and Family Dog. I loved it! The pizza was delicious, they had wine on draft, and if I wasn’t off cheese/gluten, I’d be tempted to order to-go from there for lunch today.

Things I used to procratinate at work:

This article (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/14/world/africa/tent-city-in-central-africa-swells-as-thousands-seek-safety.html?nl=todaysheadlines&emc=edit_th_20140114 ),about the state of affairs in the Central African Republic, made me realize that I shouldn’t really complain as much about the polar vortex inconvenience (comparatively, it is only an inconvenience).

I have never considered myself an “athlete” (hell, my main extracurricular was Youth in Government), but this post (http://preppyrunner.com/2014/01/just-some-weekend-musings/)  by PreppyRunner about Athlete Mode made me realize that I may be — and that it could affect the body fat reading on my scale that drives me batty. Apparently, an “athlete” is one who exercises 10 hours a week (yup) and has a resting heart rate of less than 60 beats per minute (that, too). Surprisingly, thinking of myself this way was a bit of a mental boost.

Things I laughed at:

I just recently jumped on the Downton Abbey bandwagon (thanks, Amazon Prime and cold/rainy weather), and I love it. I’m almost caught up, and I know what happened at the end of Season 3, so I think I’m putting off finishing it. This video– http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/2621d24714/tough-justice-with-michelle-dockery –about a new crime series, Tough Justice, starring Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary), had been laughing out loud for about ten minutes.

GoFugYourself’s coverage of the Golden Globes. — http://gofugyourself.com/icymi-mondays-golden-globe-posts-01-2014 — I watched the show, and there were far more dresses that I hated than I loved.

Things that made me sweat:

All in all, a really light week, exercise-wise. Wednesday and Thursday was pretty much dedicated to damage control, and then I ended up having an allergic reaction to the insulation dust in my apartment. I felt horrible for a majority of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Needless to say, returning to PB and cardio on Sunday was humbling.
